Inspired Canadian Racing Driver

My Season Opener @ Mosport

After long last, it was finally time for my first race of the season for the Motomaster Ron Fellows Karting Championship at the renamed Mosport Karting Centre.

Going into the event, I had high expectations for myself to perform and to bring home an excellent result to open up my title campaign. After testing the Thursday and Friday before the weekend, I felt confident and excited to jump in the kart for my first race on Saturday.

Overall, Saturday was a solid day for my first race of the season. I qualified 9th on the grid; the spread from 3rd to 9th was all within a 0.10 of a second! Therefore I knew, come to the race, it would be up to racecraft to get the job done. The Prefinal was a solid race, with me working my way up to 7th, just missing 6th, in a photo finish to the line. In the Final, at the start, I got shunted down the 9th.  However, I made a solid recovery drive working my way up to 5th and ultimately finishing 6th. Although I was disappointed in just missing out on the top 5, my race pace and racecraft made me confident about the rest of the upcoming season.

Sunday was a completely different story. After the hot seaming day, which was Saturday's race, Sunday treated us to a taste of rain... my favourite driving conditions! This held true when I qualified P2 on the front row of the grid and took home an impressive P2 in the prefinal.   All set for a great run in the final; the track started drying up, causing a whir of commotion.  At the last second, the team decided to take a risk and change from rain tires to slicks.  With me starting the race on the dry tire, we knew I'd struggle in the early stages, but gain pace as the race continued. Unfortunately, this strategy was never seen to the end, as on the first lap, I was T-Boned, by the ultimate race winner, braking my fuel line and ending my race.  A very disappointing finish to an otherwise perfect day.

Even with the Sunday disaster, the first round of the Motomaster Ron Fellows Karting Championship revealed that I can come back stronger and faster in the next round and that I will not give up on my championship dream until the last race is finished.
